With the first pick of the 11th Round of the 2014 MLB Draft (316th overall) the Astros select RHP Dean Deetz out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
Deetz is a 6'1" 190lb redshirt freshman who missed the entire 2013 season after high school due to Tommy John surgery. MLB.com ranked him #140 in their Top 200 draft prospects list. This season he went 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA in 12 appearances (7 starts), with 56:30 K:BB in 41.1 IP.
MLB.com:
...he has better breaking stuff and a chance to make it as a starter.Deetz showed an 89-90 mph fastball and a promising slider in the fall, and his velocity has exploded this spring. He has worked at 92-94 mph and peaked at 98, and his slider has climbed into the mid-80s. He also throws an effective curveball, but his changeup will need a lot of work. Deetz has an exceptionally quick arm but is still learning to harness it. He has trouble throwing strikes and locating his pitches on a consistent basis. He's a good athlete who was a star running back at Nixa (Mo.) High, so there's hope he'll be able to figure it out.
