According to Brian McTaggart, the Astros are calling up Corpus Christi catcher Max Stassi contingent on an anticipated DL stint for Carlos Corporan (7-Day or 15-Day), who suffered an apparent head injury (hit on the head by a foul tip) in Monday's game that caused Jake Elmore to serve as the catcher.
Stassi, 22 years old, is hitting .277/.333/.529 with a career-high 17 HR (and that's even with spending 2012 in Stockton). His current .863 OPS is highest on the current team, and was helped by a ridiculous July in which he hit .333/.404/.782 with 11 of his 29 hits leaving the yard.
Why not 22-year old Carlos Perez, who is at OKC, you might ask? Well, he's hitting .269/.326/.349. Also, Jarred Cosart is pitching tonight. When pitching to Perez at OKC, Cosart threw 38.2IP, 36H/16ER, 38K:21BB. To Cody Clark and Jason Jaramillo, Cosart threw 54.1IP, 38H/18ER, 55K:29BB. So it's not like Cosart dominated when throwing to Perez. And if you're picking the higher ceiling between Perez and Stassi, you have to lean Stassi, right?
I'd like to see what Stassi can do.
