After I went to bed in a rather foul mood last night, immediately following Carlos Pena's decidedly un-clutch game-ending GIDP with the tying run on second, of course some pretty major news broke: Tomorrow is Jarred Cosart Day.
Cosart has been called up and will start at Tampa Bay tomorrow evening, optioning Jimmy Paredes back to Oklahoma City.
Cosart:
I'm so excited and thankful for the opportunity. It's tough when you get to the Triple-A level. Everybody says
don't think about when you're going up and just keep pitching, but it's
really hard, and anybody can tell you that. Jordan [Lyles] was in that
position and a lot of other guys have been, too. I was completely caught
off-guard today. I figured with the off-days and whatnot there was no chance, so I
was caught off-guard and shocked and overjoyed and everything.
It came as a surprise to me, as well, since I was expecting him in August at the earliest. Cosart will take Dallas Keuchel's scheduled start, with Harrell in the bullpen and Norris getting skipped on Sunday in case he's called to New York for the All-Star Game, the Astros will back up Keuchel and Bedard heading into the Break.
Cosart is 7-4 with a 3.29 ERA/1.33 WHIP. Against Righties, Cosart is holding them to .220/.319/.345, while Lefties are hitting .206/.315/.282.
The future is happening.
