Instead of drowning his sorrows in a bag of free treats, however, Choate eventually convinced the store owner, Lawrence Shipley, to write him a check to make up the differences in his taxes.
And thanks to the doughnut shop's goodwill, Choate decided to give the story an even happier ending: he donated the money to Shipley's charity, the newspaper said.
